Humpback whales are great travellers. They spend months following migration routes that take them from polar ice flows in the northern and southern hemispheres to warmer tropical and sub tropical waters to mate and give birth. The migration up the east coast of Australia involves a 5,000km round trip. The whales spend summer in the cold Antarctic waters. During April as the temperature falls, they begin their northward migration up the east coast of Australia. They begin arriving in the warm subtropical waters from July through to August and by October the young calves are strong enough for the long swim south. By November most of the whales have left Australian waters on their way back to their Antarctic feeding grounds.
